The nuclear family is a characteristic of American families.

A nuclear family refers to a family group. It consists only of a husband, a wife and children. It is rare that parents live together with their children who have got married. Relatives, such as grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins and in-laws, usually live separately. This family structure is the so-called “nuclear family”.

A nuclear family is contrasted with an extended family or a joint family, in which there could be many generations living together.

Compared with a joint family, a nuclear family has some advantages. The first point is privacy and freedom of lifestyle. In a nuclear family, people can live their own ways and can do whatever they want to do. The second point is about money. There are less people and thus less expenses. Of course, this is one of the strongest points.
